The Plumber Website Study: 717 Australian Plumbing Businesses

Plumbers lead most trades on Google reviews. But 83% of the plumbing homepages we tested still do not say which suburb they are in. The data, the method and a five minute fix.

The short answer

We read the Google listings and homepages of 717 Australian plumbing businesses. Plumbers are ahead of most trades: 19% hold more than 50 Google reviews, more than twice the 9% across all 14 trades we studied. But only 49 of the 284 plumbing homepages we could test, 17%, name their own suburb in the homepage title, and 55% have no meta description.

For media, use the headline as written: 83% of tested Australian plumbing homepages do not name their own suburb in the homepage title (235 of 284). It is an Australian figure, not a Melbourne one.

Print ready charts: suburb in the title by trade, more than 50 reviews by trade and plumbers against all 14 trades. Each is a 300 dpi PNG.

Finding 1: 83% of plumbing homepages do not say where they are

49 of 284 tested plumbing homepages (17%) name the suburb Google Maps records for the business. That ties plumbers with electricians and landscapers for the best of the 14 trades, and no trade did better. Across all 2,444 tested tradie homepages the figure is 14%.

When someone has water through the ceiling, they search for a plumber and a place. The homepage title is the line Google usually shows as the blue headline, and it is one of the main things Google reads to work out what a page is about and where the business is. A title that says "Home" or only the business name tells neither Google nor the customer where you work.

Finding 2: plumbers hold big review counts more than twice as often as average

136 of 717 plumbing businesses (19%) hold more than 50 Google reviews. Across all 14 trades it is 9%. Only pest control businesses did better, at 23%.

Our read, a hypothesis rather than something the data proves: plumbing is urgent, frequent and done face to face, which gives a plumber far more chances to ask for a review than a builder who finishes a handful of large jobs a year.

Finding 3: more than half have no meta description

394 of 717 plumbing businesses (55%) have no meta description, the short summary that often appears under the blue headline in Google. Across the 14 trades it is 54%, so on this measure plumbers are no better than anyone else. Without one, Google picks a line from somewhere on the page, which can be a cookie notice, a menu or half a sentence.

The five minute fix for plumbers

None of this needs a developer. Most of it can be done from a phone.

  1. Search your own business. Type your business name into Google and read the blue headline above your website. That is usually your homepage title. If it says "Home", "Welcome" or only your business name, it is not doing its job.
  2. Put your trade and suburb in the title. What you do, where you are, then your name, for example "Emergency Plumber Ringwood | Smith Plumbing". Keep it to about 60 characters so it is not cut off. If you cover a wide area, use your base suburb or the area most of your work comes from. Never cram in a list of suburbs.
  3. Write a meta description. One or two plain sentences: who you are, where you work and why someone should call, using only what is true for you, such as licensed, after hours or upfront pricing. Wix and Squarespace keep both fields in each page's SEO settings, and on WordPress a plugin such as Yoast adds them under each page.
  4. Protect your review lead. Ask every happy customer before you leave, send the review link by text the same day, and reply to every review.
  5. Check again in a few weeks. Google takes time to pick up a change. Search your business again and confirm the new title and description show.

Method

  • Source. Google Maps business listings exported through Scrap.io on 12 August 2026, filtered to businesses that list a website and deduplicated on Google Place ID.
  • Sample. 717 businesses whose main Google category is plumber, part of the 5,787 business, 14 trade sample in the full study.
  • The suburb test. Does the homepage title contain the suburb recorded as the business address, ignoring capital letters? It runs only where both exist: 284 plumbing businesses.
  • Reviews. The export gives review bands (0, 1 to 50, 51 to 200, 201 to 500, 501 and over). More than 50 means the top three bands.
  • Analysis. Every figure on this page is computed from the published study CSV, which was recomputed from the raw export files on 8 October 2026.

Limitations

  • Every business in the sample already has a website. This says nothing about plumbers without one.
  • Geography is uneven, leaning towards Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT. Many listings had no recorded suburb and could not be tested.
  • The suburb test is an exact text match, so a different spelling of the same suburb counts as a miss. The true share may be a little higher.
  • Review counts are bands, so we report shares above and below a band edge but not averages.
  • Homepage only, read once in August 2026.
  • This describes what is on the websites. It does not measure rankings, calls or jobs won, and the explanation offered for the review gap is a hypothesis.

What it means if you are a plumber

You are probably already ahead of most trades on reviews. The cheapest remaining edge is telling Google and the customer which suburb you work in, because more than four in five of the plumbing homepages we tested do not. If you would rather have it done for you, that is what our tradie websites and tradie SEO are built around.

Common questions

Study questions.

Anything else? All questions, or text us.

How many plumbing websites were in the study?

717 Australian plumbing businesses with a website, read from Google Maps data collected on 12 August 2026. The suburb test ran on the 284 of them where both a homepage title and a recorded suburb were available.

What share of plumbers name their suburb in the homepage title?

49 of 284 tested plumbing homepages, or 17%. That ties plumbers with electricians and landscapers for the best result of the 14 trades, and it means 83% of tested plumbing homepages leave the suburb out.

How do plumbers compare with other trades on Google reviews?

19% of plumbing businesses hold more than 50 Google reviews, against 9% across all 14 trades. Only pest control did better. 14% of plumbers have no reviews at all, against 20% across the 14 trades.

What is a homepage title?

It is the line of text in a page's code that Google usually shows as the blue headline in search results. Most website builders let you change it in the page's SEO or search settings.

Does naming my suburb guarantee better rankings?

No. This study measured what is on plumbing websites, not how they rank or how many calls they get. Naming your suburb is a cheap, low risk change, and it makes the result clearer to the customer who searched.

Can I quote these figures?

Yes. Quote, chart or republish any figure on this page with a link to this page as the source, and please keep the sample size and the caveat next to the number.
